Handcrafted Chainmail Stainless Steel Bag Rune Fehu by Julie Kindt
Handcrafted Chainmail Stainless Steel Bag features a copper inlay of the Rune Fehu.
Composed of tiny 3/16" inside diameter tumbled stainless steel rings with 3/16" copper rings for the inlay. Made using the 4-in-1 armour weave. The stainless steel rings are shiny-the copper rings and beads will slowly develop a dark patina. The bag feels wonderfully smooth and fluid in-hand. Leather cord is used to lace up the sides with vintage copper beads at each end. A doubled leather cord drawstring style closure which can close and secure the bag with a handknot. The bag is topped off with a 26" long attached chain. The bag itself, when laid flat, measures 6" x 4" and is unlined. Could also be used as an elegant wall hanging.
The Runes are an ancient alphabet with Fehu as its first character. The symbol Fehu represents cattle. In ancient times, the number of cattle determined a tribe's wealth status. From an esoteric view, Fehu means wealth and success. It is the source of the modern English word: fee.
My Maille is entirely handmade by me. I wind the wire on a mandrel, cut each link by hand and assemble the piece with pliers using both ancient and modern patterns in my designs. I make what is called butted or butt-ended maille. This means the ring is closed by lining up the ends of the link one against the other. The rings are cut individually using a bolt-cutter with the ends of each link forming a double-sideways >< at the closure. This type of ring closure seems to work well for maille armour.
